Lomi Lomi Massage Techniques
The Hawaiian Touch of Lomi Lomi
Lomi Lomi Massage is a Traditional Hawaiian massage, where the practitioner uses varying techniques and materials including long, fluid strokes of the forearms and hands, volcano rocks, native plant leaves, and chant to activate the flow of “mana”, or life force energy. Emphasizing a mind and body connection, Lomi Lomi Massage increases the recipient’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Traditional Lomi Lomi
The roots of Traditional Lomi Lomi massage go way back into the island roots of Hawaii. The selection of massage therapists was a calling almost from childhood. The therapists were known as a master healer, similar to a doctor, called a “kauka”. The tradition hold that it is more of a spiritual or prayerful endeavor, including a number of tools in addition to the therapist’s own palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, and feet. It is a nature-based treatment, where sticks, stones, and herbs were used in a ritual way to hold a certain vibration.

Students who are new to massage therapy may appreciate the Polynesian roots of Lomi Lomi massage, and may even know friends or family members who may have practiced as part of their heritage. It is a real calling to learn such a traditional and effective healing art.
Board Certification in Lomi Lomi & More
It is said that Lomi Lomi massage technique takes a lifetime to master, and that there were different schools of tradition and training over the years. As of 1947, a Board of Massage was establishd to regulate and standardize Lomi Lomi massage. Laws required that therapists pass a test on anatomy, physiology, and massage theory, and these are included in the course we teach at Thai-Issan Massage Academy.
