Shiatsu, or “finger pressure” massage, is a form of physiotherapy that uses finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence. The main concept behind Shiatsu massage is that energy, or chi, circulates along channels or meridians in the body. When it flows freely, chi brings positive, fresh energy, while carrying away negative energy. Shiatsu is said to aid in the treatment of headaches, arthritis, back, neck, and shoulder pain and depression.

Shiatsu – Acupressure to Restore Healthy Balance

With roots in Japan and in Traditional Chinese medicine, Shiatsu massage has grown in use around the world since the 1970s. In addition to the finger pressure used, Shiatsu massage also focuses on rotating and stretching limbs and joints. The movements in Shiatsu help bring relief to pressure points, meridians, and bring balance to the energies in the treatment areas.

Shiatsu massage helps to remove energetic blockages by realigning meridian points in the body. There are 12 meridians that correspond to organs: lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, bladder, kidney, heart governor, triple heater, gall bladder, and liver. This balance of qi, or vital energy, allows for health and healing to occur naturally. Shiatsu massage stimulates nervous and immune systems with the applied pressure. Circulation is encouraged through blood flow.

Ayurveda – Life Science Integration

Ayurveda is a science of life; a system of natural healing that has been in existence for 5,000 years. Based in the Vedic culture of India, Tibetan, Traditional Chinese, and early Greek medicines all have roots based in Ayurveda that go back thousands of years. Ayurveda offers wisdom designed to help people realize their full potential, with guidelines based on optimal daily and seasonal routines.

Therapists learn the attributes of the three fundamental elements of Ayurveda. These energies include Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), which are forces that help shape our body and mind. Ayurveda analysis can hold important clues for body health, and therapists learn to discern how to offer nurturing, healing treatments related to diet, behavior, and other changes based on the holistic combination of body, mind, and spirit.
